Two ways to treat a cerebral aneurysm

Endovascular coiling and surgical clipping

Most aneurysm referrals MedTrav coordinates are unruptured aneurysms found incidentally on imaging — caught early enough that patients can travel to India for planned treatment rather than facing an emergency.

Endovascular coiling

A catheter-based, minimally invasive approach that fills the aneurysm from inside the vessel — shorter recovery, used where the aneurysm's shape is suitable.

Surgical clipping

An open procedure placing a clip at the aneurysm's base — used for aneurysms less suited to coiling, or in certain emergency situations.

Which approach fits your case

Aneurysm size, shape and location determine which technique your neurosurgeon recommends — confirmed after reviewing your angiogram.

From referral to discharge

How the case typically moves

Imaging reviewed remotely

CT/MR angiogram reviewed by a neurosurgeon to confirm the aneurysm's characteristics and urgency.

Treatment approach confirmed

Coiling or clipping recommended based on aneurysm shape and location, shared with you in writing.

0Pre-procedure work-up

Final imaging and bloodwork completed shortly after arrival in India.

1Procedure performed

Endovascular coiling or surgical clipping, performed by the confirmed neurosurgical team.

2Monitored recovery

ICU or high-dependency monitoring immediately after, followed by step-down care.

3Rehab & follow-up plan

Rehabilitation referrals arranged if needed, with follow-up imaging and reports shared with your home neurologist.

Figures below are indicative ranges reported across accredited Indian hospitals, for planning purposes only — not a marketed or final price.

ProcedureIndicative cost (USD)Typical hospital stay
Endovascular coiling (unruptured aneurysm)$7,000 – $12,0002–4 days
Surgical clipping$9,000 – $16,0007–10 days
Mechanical thrombectomy (acute stroke)$6,000 – $11,0005–8 days

What this actually covers, and what it doesn't: Whether coiling requires additional stenting, and how long ICU monitoring runs, are the main cost variables — MedTrav's estimate is confirmed only after your angiogram is reviewed.

Frequently asked

Questions patients ask about this procedure

What's the difference between endovascular coiling and surgical clipping for an aneurysm?

Endovascular coiling is a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure that fills the aneurysm from inside the blood vessel, avoiding open surgery. Surgical clipping is an open procedure placing a clip at the aneurysm's base. Your neurosurgeon recommends one based on the aneurysm's size, shape and location.

Is stroke care only for emergencies, or does MedTrav coordinate planned care too?

Both — MedTrav coordinates planned treatment for unruptured aneurysms and stroke-risk conditions found on imaging, as well as, in some cases, urgent referrals where local emergency stroke care is limited.

What is a thrombectomy?

A catheter-based procedure to mechanically remove a clot blocking a brain artery during an acute ischemic stroke — time-critical, and generally only relevant for patients already in India or able to reach a treating hospital within the effective treatment window.

How long is recovery after endovascular coiling?

Often just 2–4 days in hospital for an uncomplicated case, since it's minimally invasive — considerably shorter than open surgical clipping, which typically needs 7–10 days.

Does MedTrav coordinate stroke rehabilitation after treatment?

Yes, where needed — physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy referrals are arranged as part of your discharge plan if your stroke has caused functional impairment.
